Curriculum Intent for Travel and Tourism

If you study Travel and Tourism you will:-

Investigate the industry as a whole looking at all the employment opportunities as well as trends and factors that have affected tourism around the world.

Gain a hands-on insight into how business in tourism operates. The travel industry as whole is constantly evolving and your lessons here will reflect this.

The BTEC Tech Award and BTEC National qualifications in Travel and Tourism have an essential core of knowledge and applied skills. The curriculum gives learners opportunities to link education and the world of work in engaging, relevant and practical ways.

It also enables learners to enhance their English and mathematical competence in relevant, applied scenarios as well as support learners’ development of transferable interpersonal skills, including working with others, problem solving, independent study and personal, learning and thinking skills.

After completing this qualification, students will have an insightful understanding of travel destinations worldwide and in the UK in terms of their location and appeal. They will also have an appreciation of the factors that can affect tourism and its economic importance.

 

Department Information

Travel and Tourism has historically been a popular option for students in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. In 2019 we will be offering brand new qualifications to students which are aimed at supporting students who are interested in learning about the travel and tourism industry with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses or employment in the travel and tourism sector. The travel and tourism sector is the UK’s third-largest employer, employing nearly 3 million people and tourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the UK.

 

Key Stage 4

Year 10

The BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism is designed to give students a broad understanding of the core components of the travel and tourism industry. Two units are completed in year 10 and one unit is completed in year 11. The course is assessed through a combination of coursework and external assessment.

 

Year 11

In year 11, learners continue the BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism and complete the final unit required to complete the qualification.
