At King James I Academy, we aim to develop students who will be physically active and can flourish in broad and balanced PE curriculum. We believe physical education develops skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical well-being in our students now and for their future. PE lessons at King James I Academy are delivered by a range of qualified PE specialists. All pupils have the opportunity to participate in numerous sporting competitions where they are encouraged to work with others and develop their sense of sportsmanship and fair play.
In KS3 students develop their practical, tactical and strategic skills in a broad range of activities such as basketball, hockey, tennis, trampolining, rugby, football, badminton, softball, dance and athletics etc. They also have the opportunity to engage in competitive and challenging situations as well as the opportunity to enhance their leadership and officiating skills. They are taught to master complex skills and techniques such as sequencing, combining skills, outwitting opponents and developing personal fitness.
The department consists of five full time members of staff all with a breath of experience in various sporting activities such as football, fitness, swimming, trampolining and basketball.
Students in PE are offered a curriculum that has many different sporting activities to participate in so that students have the opportunity to develop different skills and experiences. Students are also offered a range of activities as part of the extra-curricular curriculum and also have the opportunity to compete against other schools. The department promotes participation and enjoyment whilst learning various skills and values through sporting activities.
In addition to the above students also have the opportunity to enhance their skills and experiences through the various trips that we provide such as rock-climbing, international football tours and trips to the annual tennis competition Wimbledon.
Students in years 7 and 8 participate in two hours of PE every week and year 9 students participate in one hour of PE every week.
Students participate in two lessons a week. In their two lessons they will participate in two different sporting activities. These activities change every half term to provide students with a full and varied curriculum. Students are graded in all activities and then an average of all sporting activities is taken for the students overall PE grade.
