Key worker students in Year 7 have been working on an exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) project in school with Mr Wheatley.

Students used their STEM skills to design, create and test their own 3D printed boats. One of the students, Chloe W, describes the process here, –In school, we have been learning about the 3D printing process and then printing our own mini boats.”

–We learned about 3D printing and how it can be used every day, from creating prosthetic legs to building space rockets. We watched videos about how the printers work and got tips for designing our own, and learned about ‘overhang’ and why you need to prevent it when printing your design.”

–We first shared ideas and designed our boats on paper in groups, then the next day we created them using a 3D designing app called TinkerCad to make our final designs. We eventually printed our final designs using Mr Wheatley’s 3D printer that he brought from home; the design took 1-2 hours to print.”

‘–We decided to test if our boats would float, capsize or sink and tested two different boats, one made by Joe, and the other made by Molly, Adelaide and Chloe. They were all successful and managed to float!”
