Additional Guidelines for Students

  • Hats or caps should NOT be worn in the Academy.  Where medical advice is substantiated by a Doctor’s note, appropriate variations to the Dress Code are permitted at the discretion of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Jewellery should be kept to a minimum, and should be small scale.  One watch and one pair of plain stud earrings are acceptable. (The Academy accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to jewellery).
  • No visible body piercings (other than one piercing in ears), fixed ornaments or tattoos.
  • Pupils must not wear acrylic nails of any kind as they pose a risk to health and safety of others.
  • Hair should be neat, clean, and styled in a conservative manner with no extreme hairstyles or unnatural colours allowed.  A simple, plain hair band/bobble or clip is acceptable.
  • Shirts should be neatly tucked into the shirt waistband; no midriffs are to be seen. All clothes need to be the appropriate size for the student.
  • Winter attire such as wellington boots, coats, hats, scarves and gloves will not be permitted in the classroom.  If these items are worn to the Academy, they must be removed before entering the classroom.
  • Good grooming and hygiene are important to the wellbeing of every student and is expected of all students.
  • Make-up must be kept to a minimum and must be appropriate to a school setting.  Staff reserve the right to be able to determine what ‘appropriate’ is in relation to the quantity and colour of make-up.
  • Students are required to bring a bag to school every day containing their Planner, books for lessons and a pencil case containing pens, pencils, a ruler and a rubber.  The bag should be robust, black / conservative in style.  The bag can be kept in a locker (lockers are available for a returnable deposit of £5).

Diversity

The Academy is an inclusive institution which celebrates cultured diversity.  Where issues related to the Dress Code arise and where parents / guardians feel that cultured, religious or other beliefs should be considered we would welcome the opportunity to discuss an appropriate response.  As recognition of this students are permitted to wear the hijab and the turban within the Academy.  Any other headdress/headwear worn for religious reasons is restricted to Academy corridors and are not to be worn in classrooms.  In order to support productive communication, faces must be visible.
