Year 6 Q&A

We realise that you will probably have a lot of questions about King James and what it’s like to start secondary school so we have put together a panel of staff and students who will answer any questions you might have. See previous questions or ask your own questions in here!

Dear Parent and Year 6 pupil

As we are all aware, things continue to be very different this year but we know how important transition activities are to a smooth start to Year 7. We have updated the Transition section of the website and we will be adding information and activities here as the term goes along to help you get ready for life in Year 7.

Over the next few weeks, I will be having ‘virtual visits’ with all Year 6 pupils coming to King James. This will give us the opportunity to meet each other and for Year 6 to ask any questions they might have about starting at secondary school. Later in the term, we hope to organise some virtual tutor group meetings so that you can meet your tutor and other people in your tutor group.

At the beginning of the summer holidays, there will be the Transition Summer School which will have two days based in school before we spend three days at Weardale Activity Centre taking part in lots of outdoor activities. Links and information can be found on the website too.

This week, we are launching our reading competition. Mrs Reynolds has picked four books for you to read and to use them as a springboard to imaginative projects which you will be able to tell us all about. All of the books can be accessed via a website and details on how to log on can be found on the introduction page. You can find out about ancient civilisations, the world and how to look after yourself.

We have also chosen the award-winning transition programme ‘Be Awesome, Go Big’ for you to complete. This is a series of activities, short films and texts to help you prepare for Year 7, starting with having a positive image of yourself and then looking at the different issues which you might have to face as you start secondary school. There are two books which complement the course and deal with transition but you do not need to buy them. To finish the project, there is a range of challenges which you can complete and then show your form tutor and Head of Year.
