Intent Statement

At King James I Academy, our intent is to deliver a high-quality personal development programme that enables all pupils to succeed academically and succeed personally, socially, and emotionally. We are committed to ensuring that pupils develop the knowledge, character, and attributes required to make informed choices, manage risk, and become active, responsible citizens in modern Britain. The curriculum we provide extends beyond the academic, technical or vocational; our personal development provision is carefully planned and inclusive, ensuring that pupils:

  • Understand how to build healthy, respectful relationships with each other and understand consent
  • Learn how to maintain physical and mental health, including emotional wellbeing
  • Know how to keep themselves safe, including online and in the community
  • Have an understanding of EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) and the protected characteristics
  • Are confident, resilient, independent individuals
  • Understand fundamental British values
  • Are fully informed of future pathways, LMI, further education, training and employment

Personal development is embedded across all areas of the curriculum, including PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), assemblies, tutor time, enrichment activities, leadership opportunities, and high-quality pastoral support. Pupils are given meaningful opportunities to take on responsibility, contribute to the school community, and develop leadership skills.

Our provision promotes high expectations for behaviour and conduct with students embracing King James I Academy 7 standards. Students are encouraged to be prepared, be positive, show respect, engage and succeed. We ensure that all pupils, including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged, receive appropriate support and guidance to thrive. Our intent is that every pupil leaves King James I Academy as a well-rounded, informed, and confident young person, prepared for the next stage of education, employment, or training, and equipped with the values and life skills needed to contribute positively to society.

Our Academy Learning Journey below highlights some of the key events and activities students can take part in outside of timetabled curriculum lessons. Each curriculum area has subject specific personal development opportunities embedded; you can click on the subject icons to take you to department opportunities.

Students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, more information can be found below. The personal development provision at King James I Academy also dedicates curriculum time to PSHE/RSE Citizenship, Careers lessons and Inspire Curriculum within personal development lessons. More information on this framework can be found in the personal development lessons section.
