Led by Director of Learning for Languages, Miss Stephenson, who is well known for her dedication to eco-friendly projects, the group is currently taking on a range of projects which will benefit our environment.

The initiative is supported by Geography Teacher, Miss Burton and Student Support Worker, Mrs Bainbridge who are both keen to help King James succeed as we work towards achieving the Eco Schools Silver Award from Keep Britain Tidy. The Eco group, which is open to all year groups, launched with a litter picking session around the school site as part of the Great Big School Clean 2021. Students collected litter which was then sorted for recycling, although we are delighted to say that only a small amount of rubbish was found in the first place.

The group has explored a number of initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint, some of which are already underway; these include recycling schemes for paper, plastic, fizzy drink cans, postage stamps and crisp packets. Many other ideas are planned for the year ahead as restrictions are hopefully eased, such as a real drive against single use plastics, especially water bottles and cups. Plastic pollution is obviously harmful to nature at all levels but it is destroying marine life, damaging human health, littering beaches and landscapes, and clogging waste streams and landfills, which are all extremely harmful to the environment.
