September 2025

Our annual Open Evening was a huge success with hundreds of local families visiting us to tour our facilities and take part in a host of activities.

Visitors were greeted with a live performance from our music students and our army of student volunteers were a credit to King James as they welcomed visitors and escorted people around our buildings. Year 6 children and their siblings had great fun cooking in Food & Nutrition, using DSLR cameras in Photography, using our green screen room to make a film in Media Studies and learning dance routines in Performing Arts; they also enjoyed a variety of sports including football on our 4g pitch. There were also plenty of fun activities and challenges in Maths, English, History, Geography, Business, Health & Social Care, Languages, Computing and Religious Studies.

Our Science and Drama departments stole the show on the night; visitors were in awe of the amazing, explosive experiments in Chemistry, and the opportunities to try dissection in Biology. In Drama, there was a fun challenge to ‘identify the alien’ in a live performance featuring different characters played by our own Drama students.

Visitors also learned about our Chromebook scheme and had the opportunity to try our lunch menu, whilst meeting our team of Senior Leaders and Student Support Workers.

Applications are now open for Year 7 entry in September 2026 at www.durham.gov.uk
