Creative Media students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have been treated to an unusual workshop in SFX makeup. Local makeup artist, Amy Algar visited the Academy to deliver a special effects workshop and demonstration, designed to educate media students on how to use liquid latex to create zombie prosthetics and props for filmmaking and photography projects.

Liquid latex can be built up in layers and dries in any form needed, creating scars or gashes which can then be enhanced with SFX makeup including fake blood, paint and eye shadow. This was demonstrated on Sixth Former, Molly T who was made into a zombie, and students were able to see the process for themselves so they would be able to practice with this type of makeup on themselves at a later date. There will be opportunities in the future for students to use SFX makeup for their coursework projects and, because of this workshop, they will now have the understanding to achieve excellent results. Following the demonstration, all students got to try using liquid latex for themselves in a hands-on workshop where they made amputated fingers to take home!

The overall experience was great fun but it was also educational; not only did students learn brand new skills but it also inspired them to investigate some of the less conventional careers available to them in the media industry, and encouraged them to think outside of the box for their own design work.
