Students in Key Stage 3 have enjoyed a unique learning experience delivered by Mr Wheatley, our Academy Librarian, in Mrs M's Cafe, which is located in the Market Place.
Across a three week period, groups of 16 students walked to Mrs M's to take part in a session which combined reading excerpts from Katya Balen's book, The Light in Everything, with writing poetry and creating origami!
The book is about Tom, a shy and timid young boy who uses the Japanese art of origami to help him cope with his anxiety. Set by the sea, the story focuses on blended families, difficult life changes and personal insecurities.
Following the initial reading, students were invited to write a poem themed around the sea on origami paper; they then tried origami for themselves by folding their poems into a variety of intricate shapes.
Those who attended the sessions were all nominated by their teachers for their effort in timetabled reading lessons. Not only did they enjoy the fun activities, but they were also treated to pizza as an extra reward.
