By special invitation, Year 10 students, Kyle B. and Marshall G., accompanied by Year 13 student, Harriet E., have recently attended a four day work placement with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in Stratford.

The aim of the project was to raise awareness about the importance of theatre production knowledge for those interested in a career in technical stage production, set design or acting. This was a pilot project which involved only 40 students from across the UK; all were selected to take part by the RSC.

During the week, our students worked with members of the various technical departments within the company who are responsible for the creative process and organisation of the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company productions.

The trio worked alongside key RSC staff. Harriet enjoyed working in the props warehouse to discover the creative techniques used to develop sets, props and costume, whilst Marshall was given the important task of creating the promotional leaflet for the play with the marketing department. Kyle worked alongside specialist front of house staff, meeting and greeting the vistors, improving his skills in customer service. The experience allowed them to gain an insight into the practical workings of this renowned institution.

This year, the official RSC play is The Tempest; as part of the experience, the three Shakespeare fans were also given the opportunity to meet and talk to some of the cast members, Mark Quartley who plays Ariel, Jenny Rainsford who takes the part of Miranda and James Tucker who plays the infamous Alonso. They were also able to watch their dramatic dress rehearsal.
