In September, we were privileged to welcome Dr Saralyn Mark, the renowned leader in women's health, who visited us to inspire Year 7 students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Our Sixth Form Science students also enjoyed the unique opportunity to listen to our distinguished visitor.

Dr Mark, who is based in Washington DC, has enjoyed a celebrated career as an Endocrinologist, Geriatrician and specialist in women's health, and her work has even included acting as an advisor to the space agency, NASA, a fact which created much excitement among our students. She visited only two schools in the area, King James and St. Bede's in Peterlee, so we were delighted when Mrs Lee, our Assistant Director of Learning for Science was able to arrange this memorable experience for our students.

Students were fascinated as Dr Mark spoke of her passion for space: "As children, we were enthralled by the space programme," she said. "We were able to see our astronauts walk on the moon and it fired our imaginations. I dreamed of being a doctor on the moon." Now, as ambassador for the Durham Netpark, president of SolaMed Solutions, worldwide Medical and Scientific Policy Advisor and Teacher, she may not have realised her childhood ambition but her achievements are outstanding.

During the event, our Year 7's followed in the footsteps of many astronaut crews by taking part in a competition to design their own "mission patch' - " a tradition still upheld by astronauts who work alongside a graphic designer to design a bespoke patch for their suit. There were many outstanding results but the winner, judged by Dr Mark, was Kyle who received a trophy for his design.
