A group of 15 Year 8 students have been taking part in a new club, led by Miss Houlahan, as part of our Key Stage 3 enrichment programme.

Each week, throughout the summer term, the group were visited by the Reverend David Spokes and Lay Preacher, Stephen, from St Stephen’s C of E Church in Willington, and together they discussed matters of philosophy.

All topics were carefully selected to promote mindful, meaningful and thought-provoking debate, and therefore they included forgiveness, the holocaust, problems of evil and suffering, coping with grief, matters of national security, Greek and Hebrew, and even space exploration and life on other planets! They also spent a fascinating session discussing whether it is ever acceptable to tell lies, and the potential consequences of lying, such as loss of trust and respect.

Sessions have been extremely popular and as a result, Miss Houlahan will be offering an increased number of places this year and inviting guests from different faiths to take part. The club gives students the opportunity to consider different opinions and to develop confidence in expressing themselves in a group.
