African tribes and masks in Art

January 2026

In our Art & Photography Department, students in Year 8 have been learning about African art.

Students produced artwork inspired by African tribes, masks, textiles and traditional colours and textures. African art encompasses a diverse range of visual culture, often created for spiritual, social, or functional purposes rather than purely aesthetics. Historically, many pieces were created for rituals, ceremonies, or to connect with ancestors and spiritual realms.

This was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop a range of new skills and to work with mixed media; as you can see from the picture on the right, the results were outstanding.
