GCSE Geography students in Year 11 have been studying coastal vulnerability and change as part of their coursework in a practical lesson at Seaham.
Over two days, all Year 11 Geographers were able to take part in a fieldtrip directly relating to their classroom learning. This was designed to boost their understanding by giving real life context to their learning.
At Seaham, students collected data on how the size of stones changes dramatically from the base of the cliff to the waters edge. They worked in teams and placed a ‘quadrat’ every 3m on the beach, then from each quadrat they selected 10 stones at random and recorded the size; students found that as they got closer to the water, the stones got smaller.
This is just one of the many ways that our Geography department builds fun and practical learning opportunities into lessons, creating an exciting learning experience for students in all year groups.
