Travel & Tourism

Travel and Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK and employs over 2.5 million people. The course enables students to gain a broad understanding of travel and tourism and study selected areas in more depth. It enables progression to further education and employment in the sector and helps develop key skills that are highly valued by employers.

Entry Requirements

A BTEC Level 2 Travel & Tourism is desirable although not essential, however students will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, good computer skills and the ability to work independently.

How is the course taught?

The course is taught through planned lectures and discussions with opportunities to work on a combination of group tasks and independent projects. In addition to classroom-based learning, students will be able to take part in visits to a range of organisations and listen to guest speakers, which will help to develop a deep understanding of various aspects of Travel and Tourism.

What areas are covered by the course?

There are three mandatory topics: The World of Travel & Tourism; Global Destinations; and Managing the Customer Experience.


Students will also cover one optional topic chosen from: The Airport Experience; Specialist Tourism; Visitor attractions; Events, Conferences & Exhibitions; and Work Experience in Travel & Tourism.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through a combination of coursework and external assessment.

Career Opportunities

There are an increasing number of employment opportunities in the travel industry. This qualification will prepare you to progress onto study this subject at university. It will also provide a solid foundation for you to apply for apprenticeships with Travel Agents and Tour Operators. Careers could include Travel Agent or Manager, Airport Staff, Airline Crew, Holiday Representative, Travel Author, Hotel Inspector, Teacher and Lecturer.
