Sixth Form student, Abbi receives her award from Cllr Joy Allen, Mayor of Bishop Auckland.

Cllr Joy Allen, the Mayor of Bishop Auckland has visited King James I Academy to present three of its students with some very special awards. The presentation was a special occasion for all involved as it was also the first official engagement as Mayor for Cllr Allen, who was chosen to serve at the Town Council Annual Meeting this month.

Sixth Form student, Abbi S was presented with the prestigious "Academic Achievement Award' not only for excellence in her GCSE and A-Level studies but also for the success she has achieved as part of the "Social Mobility Programme 2020'. This national initiative invites applications from gifted and talented young people, and recognises the potential of a select few by offering them the opportunity to take part in higher-level work experience.

Abbi, who is studying four A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Geography has been offered a work placement at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle during the forthcoming summer holidays. There she will shadow young doctors in order to gain an insight into medicine. This is a fantastic opportunity for Abbi who aspires to enter the medical profession herself.

The Mayor also presented the "Town Council Youth Award' to Year 7 students, Lilly T and Jay M for the excellent work they do in school through energy conservation initiatives and recycling projects such as "the Big Battery Hunt'.
