Textiles...it's not just about sewing

Textiles students, Katie and Amy work on their fantastic creations.

Ask most people to describe a Textiles lesson and they are likely to talk about sewing machines, fabric and thread. Ask someone at King James however and they'll say it's about so much more.

Not only do our students work with traditional materials and learn the basic skills such as pattern cutting and how to use a sewing machine, they also design and make their own fabrics and create innovative costumes and fabulous couture fashion pieces using an array of unexpected materials such as plastic and metal.

Our Textiles courses particularly appeal to students who are interested in a career in fashion design, or theatrical costume as students leave us with an impressive portfolio. In fact, aspiring Fashion Designer, Year 13 student, Katie Zarins, pictured here with Amy Connell, has already received a guaranteed offer of a university place at Manchester Metropolitan based on the strength of her portfolio.

Currently, Textiles students are busy completing their BTEC coursework under the watchful eye of A-Level Art Teacher, Mrs Ashman, who has been working with our students while Miss Smith is away on maternity leave.
