Rock Climbing for GCSE PE

February 2018

Students developed a variety of skills during the two-day course at Durham Climbing Centre.

A group of eight Year 11 students have visited Durham Climbing Centre this month as part of their GCSE PE qualification.

Students attended the centre for two consecutive days to develop skills in climbing, belaying, smearing, traversing and pinching. They also learned how to tie figure 8 knots and how to tie onto harnesses before being assessed on all of their newfound skills against the AQA GCSE criteria. This assessment is worth 10% of their final GCSE grade.

Opportunities such as this bring diversity to our PE provision and give students the chance to try sports which are not available in our immediate vicinity. Climbing is a real test of strength and flexibility but it is also a strategic sport which requires problem solving and effective teamwork.
