Year 11 PE student, Cory S discovered a natural talent for climbing.

Over 40 fearless Year 11 students have conquered the mighty climbing wall at ROF 59 in Newton Aycliffe as part of their BTEC and GCSE qualification in Sport.

As part of their coursework, students must demonstrate their skills and techniques in a variety of sports in order to gain a high grade in their assessment overall. Rock Climbing is just one of the many sporting activities in which our students participate, but it is one that requires a great deal of tactical planning and technique to achieve success.

Students fully embraced the challenge presented by ROF 59s huge climbing wall and all achieved excellent grades on the day. Some students however, such as Cory S, who is pictured above at an astounding height, demonstrated a natural talent for this extreme sport.

Students in our SSC (Student Support Centre) have also been developing a new physical activity skill in Rock Climbing as part of their PE lessons. Students have pushed themselves to their limits and proved that they are capable of so much more than they originally thought, with some scaling an incredible 65 feet high!

Alongside learning how to climb and abseil correctly, the SSC students learned about general climbing safety and how to tie specific knots. All participants gained excellent belaying skills, supporting each other during the climbs, and showed a great attitude to teamworking.
