Students try out gorge walking!

Students have recently visited Watermillock in Ullswater for our annual, week-long outward bound trip. Unlike last year's arctic conditions in Howtown, the weather was good, which meant that students could take part in a wider range of outdoor challenges.

The challenges began with the "Jog and Dip', a physical activity which involves jumping into 4oC water after a run; this exercise was used as a way to toughen up the marines during the war!

Students then took part in a 5km trek with full kit bags, before setting up camp for the night, cooking and entertaining themselves. All returned to the centre with an immense feeling of pride after pushing themselves to the limit.

Other challenges included canoeing, obstacle courses, rock climbing, gorge walking, trapeze, traversing across a rock face, high ropes and night walks without torches. The adventure was brought to a close with an evening around the campfire toasting marshmallows and an evaluation of the course, which contributed to a valuable educational experience overall.

Mr Ramsey, Mrs Lamb and Miss Howard who accompanied the group, were all extremely impressed by the resilience and determination shown by our students. Mr Ramsey said, "I am so proud of them all; they each gave every challenge 100% effort and committment. Often we seek the easy option but if we don't challenge ourselves we will never know what we are capable of. These students have so much to be proud of."

As a result of their hard work, three students have been offered a scholarship to return and complete the three week independent course. This is a fantastic opportunity and they will have our full support in getting there.
