Sixth Formers catch their breath after the initial warm up.

Year 12 students have been put through their paces in a "boot camp' style training session held by the Royal Marines, who were invited to King James by our Health and Social Care department.

The intensive training session, which was organised by Mrs Armstrong and Miss Buchannan, was designed to help Sixth Form Health and Social Care students fully understand anatomy by experiencing the effects of exercise on the muscles, internal organs and the brain. It was also an exciting opportunity for other Sixth Form students to test their stamina and get a glimpse into the physical fitness levels of a Commando, as part of our Summer of Sport initiatve.

Although a grueling test of stamina, many of our students were surprised at their personal ability to overcome the natural desire to give in; not only did they complete the challenge with admirable determination, but they also proved to themselves that they could achieve much more than they had originally anticipated. We hope that this will inspire them in everything they do.

Trainers from the Royal Marines were particularly impressed by our Sixth Formers: "The training session was extremely tough but students embraced the challenge and really pushed themselves. We spotted some who have real potential should they choose to pursue a career in the Marines. They should all feel extremely proud."

Following the session, Health and Social Care students returned to the classroom to take part in breathing tests, record their temperature, blood pressure and heart rate and to discuss the overall effect of the session on the body.

The Royal Marines will be returning to King James soon to offer advice to any student interested in a career in the forces.
