Sixth Form Media Production students have recently produced cookbooks to promote healthy living and eating amongst children and young people. The creation of the products, which coincided with their media coursework, has given them real-world experience of publishing.

The challenging brief stated that the theme of the book had to be healthy eating in support of the national drive to help combat rising obesity levels amongst young people in the UK, who often lead an unhealthy lifestyle and cook very little. All students in the class chose to aim their books at older teenagers, particularly those who are due to leave home for the first time as they head off to university, as they felt that this was the target audience they knew the most about and could relate to. With careful thought, the resulting cookbooks prove that by using alternative and healthier ingredients, it is possible to cook healthier versions of teen favourites such as pizza and curry, and that home cooking is achievable for even novice cooks.

As part of their BTEC course, they have had a prototype produced and will also have the book made into an e-book. This will soon be available for free download to our students and our local community from a virtual library on our website; this area is currently under construction.
