Abi H, Nathaniel A, Jonathan R, Aaron D and Shaye K meet two of our Year 10 students, Emelia and Niamh.

During our annual Curriculum Week programme, around 430 primary pupils in Year 5 joined us at King James for a fun-packed secondary school experience.

Students enjoyed a host of curriculum sessions including Maths, English, Science, Drama, Art, History, Media, PE, Geography, ICT and Languages, alongside some top secret bonus activities, designed to build confidence and creativity through a range of innovative learning sessions.

Pupils learned about World War I in a combined History/Media session which used green screen technology to bring the subject to life, and in ICT pupils learned how to generate QR codes and became computer programmers by programming robots to follow a series of commands. In Science, students learned about sound waves and used their new knowledge to design and make a pair of ear protectors.

Throughout the week, each school was able to enjoy one of the exciting bonus sessions, which offered pupils the opportunity to experience something a little different. For example, in the Creepy Crawly Roadshow, pupils got to meet some fascinating creatures including the Bearded Dragon, Tarantula, Giant Cockroach, Millipede and Corn Snake; and an innovative approach to improving literacy skills saw students becoming part of the plot in an active story-telling session with Raggy Beard the "tale-teller', whose stories unfold according to the participation of his audience.

Pupils also enjoyed opportunities to develop balance and co-ordination through themed workshops in circus skills and airborne football skills where pupils watched a demonstration from professionals before trying the challenges for themselves.

We hope our visitors enjoyed their experience at King James I Academy and look forward to welcoming them to our Open Evening event in September.
