Media Studies students in Years 10-14 have enjoyed a trip to the cinema to see The Railway Children Return as part of the Into Film Festival 2022.

The experience gave the the group of 50 students the opportunity to analyse the codes and conventions of period drama and to consider the many additional challenges faced by film producers when planning and creating a period piece. Not only do production companies need to find locations that are appropriate to the era, which is becoming more difficult as we move through the decades, but authentic props and costumes can also be an issue.

Students in Years 10 and 11 are currently analysing the film making techniques used in a variety of movies for their coursework component, and The Railway Children Returns will offer an excellent case study, whilst Year 12s are currently developing ideas for a film production of their own.

The film also provided students with an interesting insight into life during WWII; this was particularly poignant as the trip took place just days before the Armistice Day service at King James.
