Year 9 Food Technology students have been taking part in Mrs Lamb's "Swiss Roll Challenge'. In this fun activity, students have just one hour to make and decorate a swiss roll without adult assistance.

Students work in pairs for the challenge, which helps to build excellent team working skills. They are provided with a basic recipe and ingredients but after that they must use their own initiative and cooking skills to create a successful end result. As well as the taste, cakes were also judged on their visual presentation and students came up with some excellent designs from Mickey Mouse to a Rainbow.

This session was great fun but it was also an opportunity to develop independence and problem solving skills as teams had to find ways to overcome a number of issues, such as how to cool their cake quickly to allow chocolate to set within the time period, or prevent their cream topping from melting instantly!
