Our Head Boy and Head Girl receive the NCS Silver Status Award on behalf of King James.

National Citizen Service (NCS) has awarded Silver "Champion' status to King James I Academy thanks to its great commitment to working alongside NCS to build awareness of the NCS programme and having exceeded expectations in promoting the programme as well as recruiting students to take part.

The Academy has been given the accolade from the royal chartered NCS programme, which supports young people's transition to adulthood by developing their strength of character and life skills. The programme is open to 16-17 year olds and takes place during the summer holidays. NCS activities includes outdoor team-building exercises, a university-style residential and the opportunity for teenagers to create their own social action project to make a difference in their local communities.

King James I Academy achieved the award thanks to their programme recruitment success during the 2017/18 academic year when over 25% of their Year 11 students signed up.

Mr Grieveson said, "At King James we are committed to providing our students with lots of opportunities for personal growth and this year continues to see a fantastic reaction from our pupils who have attended NCS, which has resulted in a positive impact throughout the whole of King James. We have seen first hand how the programme can enhance our students' CVs when planning for their future, be that for university, college or the world of work. We are really proud to have been awarded Champion status by NCS and look forward to our pupils continuing to benefit from the programme in the years to come."

NCS is making a positive contribution towards developing our country's future talent and it is proven to increase confidence, communication and leadership abilities. University participation rates for those who take part in NCS was on average 12% higher than those who didn't take part.

Katie McCluskey, NCS Recruitment Coordinator for County Durham said, "We always receive a warm welcome from staff and students at King James I Academy so I am delighted to present an award to mark their NCS Champion status. Once again, we have had a fantastic response for the Summer 2019 NCS programme and the successful applicants can look forward to an action-packed summer."
