Year 9 Music students have enjoyed a day trip to The Hub in Barnard Castle to take part in a music masterclass.

The trip was organised by Mr Smith, Director of Learning for Music, to give students the opportunity to experience a professional studio environment with high-level sound, recording and editing equipment. The intention was to give students a greater understanding of how technology is used in the industry to create the music we enjoy every day, whilst introducing students to some of the crucial technical roles that exist behind the scenes.

The group of 18 students worked with Studio Manager and professional guitarist, Pete Bousefield in the studio to improve their guitar technique and record a demo, before learning how to apply effects, balance sound and adjust levels to create a more professional sound overall.

This was followed by some outdoor activities including Kayaking on The Hub lake and taking on the High Ropes challenge. These activities require teamworking skills, courage, determination and resilience, all personal qualities which Mr Smith pointed out are necessary to succeed in the competitive music industry.

Overall, the group returned to King James with a much greater appreciation of how music is made and a healthy respect for the technicians and engineers who make it happen.
