Students enjoyed the opportunity to assess why York is a thriving destination for business and tourism.

As part of their BTEC courses, Business Studies students and Travel and Tourism students in Year 10 have visited York to conduct research into promotional strategies for building a business, and how UK cities attract tourists.

The group travelled to York by train to first assess how ease of travel and cost of public transport affects the number of tourists that choose to visit our most popular cities.

Business students then completed research into the vibrant and lucrative café culture in York as part of their coursework unit, Promoting a Brand. As part of the unit, students will be tasked with designing a promotional campaign for their own café and by investigating the strategies used by the vast range of cafes in the city, and considering the unique selling point of each, they were able to begin developing their own ideas.

Travel and Tourism students visited York to research the many permanent and seasonal visitor attractions as part of their coursework, from the renowned York Minster and York Dungeons to the bustling Christmas Market and array of street vendors. In their current unit, they will be creating a promotional brochure to attract tourists to a specific UK destination and there is much to be learned from considering what makes York one of the most popular cities for tourism in the country.

Overall it was an excellent learning experience for our students - visiting an unfamiliar city has huge benefits as we are naturally more observant of our surroundings.
