As part of Mr Shearer's 'Aim Higher' initiative, 46 students in Years 9 and 10 have recently enjoyed a visit to Northumbria University, complete with overnight stay in Newcastle.

Students were able to meet both staff and students at the university, hear about the various degree courses on offer, and freely ask questions they may have about applying for and attending uni. They also took part in various activities to help them begin thinking about what course of study they will need to take to ensure that they will be on track to achieving their career goals. One of the activities involved a realistic court room scenario in which students took on various roles from Juror to Barrister and Judge, to the Accused and Witnesses; this excellent learning activity took place in the mock court room which is attached to Northumbria's Law School.

Students also enjoyed a campus tour and overnight stay in Northumbria's Halls of Residence to get a taste of university life. As an extension of this, the trip included time to explore Newcastle city centre and an evening meal at Pizza Hut followed by a visit to the cinema to see Independence Day or Secret Life of Pets. For some of the participants, this was their first night away from home and therefore the trip offered an insight into independent living and the opportunity to build social skills and confidence. This is extremely important for our young people, especially those entering Year 11 in a matter of weeks, as they will need to begin making important decisions and considering their long-term goals.

On day two, the group were able to further explore the city centre with some free time for shopping before travelling to Tynemouth for team-building games and relaxation time on the beach. Overall the trip was an excellent experience for all who attended; many students commented that the visit had helped them to focus their plans for the future, whilst increasing confidence in their ability to succeed at A-Level and achieve a university place on the course of their choice.
