As millions of us watched Wimbledon 2016 on TV, our Girls Active sports group joined the hundreds of lucky ticket holders on Court 2 to watch the action first hand.

The group of eight girls in Years 8 and 9, accompanied by Miss O'Connor and Miss Short, our Director and Assistant Director of Learning for PE, visited London for two days to experience the incredible atmosphere at the most famous tennis tournament in the world. Despite the rain, which delayed play for hours, with tickets to Court 2 they were able to watch Nick Kyrgios's action-packed five-set victory over Dustin Brown.

Members of the group were selected for their excellent contribution in PE lessons and as role models to other students, as well as their positive behaviour in school.

Prior to the trip, the group raised an impressive £600 through a variety of fundraising activities including bake sales, raffles and a sponsored walk to Durham. The money helped to subsidise their Wimbledon tickets, rail travel, accommodation and a visit to the theatre to see the spectacular Lion King stage show. The group also visited M&M World and enjoyed some free time for shopping in Covent Garden.

Both Miss O'Connor and Miss Short commented on the outstanding conduct of the girls on their return to school. "The girls were a credit to King James throughout the trip," said Miss O'Connor. "Their behaviour at Wimbledon was exemplary and their determination to remain positive, even through the relentless bad weather and long delays, was great to see."

Miss Short said, "It has been a pleasure to work with these students throughout the whole process of planning and fundraising for the trip. We could not have wished for a more enthusiastic or better behaved group of young people. It has been an excellent weekend."
