Chloe collects her new Kindle Fire from English Teacher, Miss Wharton.

Year 9 student, Chloe C is the first winner in our year-long "Accelerated Reading' competition. The initiative, which is run by Miss Wharton in our English department in conjunction with Mr Wheatley in our busy school library, offers book lovers the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw each half term to win a "Kindle Fire.

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 can take part in the incentive-based competitions by reading a selection of books followed by participation in an online quiz to test their understanding. Each time they achieve 100% in this quiz, students earn a raffle ticket which is entered into the free prize draw. This means that the more books a student reads the more chances they have to win! Thanks to Chloe's love of reading, she had earned a number of raffle tickets during the half term although she still did not expect to win. We hope she is enjoying her brand new Kindle.

There is much evidence to prove that reading is key to raising attainment across all subjects. Students who read on a regular basis often have higher level vocabulary and are more confident and skilled in their ability to communicate in writing; this is an essential skill at exam time. To help your child reach their full potential, please encourage them to take up reading for pleasure as an every day hobby.
