The Editorial Team responsible for the rapidly growing free UK e-magazine, Exclaimer is now in the process of producing issue 4: the Christmas edition. Who's behind this new online publication? Our enterprising student journalists at King James.

Exclaimer magazine began in May 2012 as an after school activity run by Media Teacher and Academy Graphic Designer, Lisa Davies. "My role at King James has always included producing Vision; working on magazines is something that I have always enjoyed throughout my career as a designer so working with young people to develop an e-magazine was an exciting prospect. I discovered that there were a number of students who aspired to make journalism their career and it was this that gave me the original idea. Fortunately, Mr Grieveson could see the educational value immediately and was extremely supportive, in fact he was one of our first subscribers."

Exclaimer gives young people an outlet for their views and an opportunity to gain experience and develop their skills in a realistic working environment, complete with team meetings, decision- making, compromise and deadlines. The original team of seven students has now grown to ten with a number of additional regular contributors, an aspiring photographer and trainee graphic designers. They even have their own writer of fiction and are beginning to generate ideas for an effective marketing strategy that can take them forward as the magazine grows, and growing it is!

Last month, the team launched Exclaimer on Facebook and Twitter and this boosted readership both locally and nationally. The magazine now has subscribers in Manchester, Brighton, Bristol, Glasgow, Newcastle and Sunderland as well as a large number in the Bishop Auckland area. With feature articles on people such as Helen Goodman MP, Sir Bobby Robson, Chris Hoy and Alexander McQueen, the magazine has something of interest for adults too and many have commented on the outstanding quality of the writing.

Currently, the team are working on the Christmas issue, due for release in mid-December and with feature pieces on James Bond, Stephen Hawking and Heston Blumenthal, combined with winter fashion, top Christmas films and songs and most wanted teen gifts, it's set to be the best yet.

Long-term, plans include recruitment from all year groups at King James and encouraging other young people in the area to submit articles by email for consideration by the team. This will give others the chance to gain experience and voice their opinions and our students the opportunity to develop skills in editing, proof-reading and management too.
