Key Stage 3 students have attended an informative talk and Q&A session with Mick Manning, author of the children's novel, Charlie's War and book illustrator, Brita Granstrom.

The event was held at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School as part of the annual Durham Book Festival, which celebrates creative writing and literature through a variety of organised talks and workshops. The beautifully illustrated Charlie's War tells the story of Mick Manning's grandfather, who joined the army in 1914 and served on the front line in Egypt, Palestine and France during World War I. Charlie lived to tell his tale and the book brings his story to life using illustrations and scrap book artefacts.

The trip gave students an inspirational view of creative writing and book illustration as career options, and a fascinating insight into wartime history. Everyone enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to forthcoming events.
