New College Durham 1-1 King James

The King James 6th form football team "kicked off' their North East College League campaign with a challenging away match against New College Durham. Brian Atkinson managed the team while Gavin Lowe was away.

Both teams gave it their all from the start of the game. Jordan L (Darlington U18's player and King James Midfielder, gave the visitors the lead with a great run from the edge of the box before sliding the ball into the corner of the net.

The hosts had a few chance to equalise, but King James Goalkeeper, Declan B stood firm. Late in the match however, a foul was committed five yards outside the King James box and in a controversial decision the referee blew his whistle and pointed at the penalty spot. The New College Durham striker taking the penalty powered the penalty directly down the middle to equalise.

Both sides were given opportunities to take the lead, but through excellent defensive play, the game remained tied.

After the match, manager Brian Atkinson said:

"Considering it was out first league game we played some terrific football. We were unfortunate not to win the game. The penalty decision was ridiculous, as the foul was clearly outside of the box. Overall I'm really pleased with how we approached the game"
