Learning Through Industry for Media Students

Sixth Form Creative Media Production students have recently visited Lintons Printers in Crook to learn about commercial printing processes as part of their BTEC studies.

The group is currently working on a creative unit, which involves the design and production of the commemorative "Class of 2014' Yearbook for our current Year 11 students. In order to prepare accurate artwork, students need to understand the process of colour separation, plate making and lithographic printing, and seeing the process for themselves helps to embed the technical requirements and put them in context.

"Commercial processes can be difficult to learn in the classroom," said Media Teacher, Mrs Davies, "so this was an excellent opportunity to experience a mass production environment and see the process first-hand."

"Gaining a sound basic knowledge of industry practice will give our aspiring graphic designers the edge in an interview situation. Often, having creative flair is no longer enough to be successful in such a competitive industry; designers must also know how to get their products from the computer screen to the printing press. This course is designed to make sure that our students leave us with realistic working skills."

Students were guided through the printing process by Lintons Director, Ian Fothergill, who even arranged to print a bespoke "Media Class' poster as a surprise gift. This is the second student trip hosted by Lintons; we would like to thank all involved for their support.
