Year 10 student, Thomas helps younger peers to improve their reading skills.

Our newly refurbished library, complete with a large selection of new books including best sellers and non-fiction, is now open to students and it is proving to be a big hit.

With larger bookshelves, new modern furniture, comfortable seating and large, comfy floor cushions, our students tell us that it is now a much more inviting and inspiring environment for reading and study.

Students felt that our old library was in need of updating to provide a more relaxing atmosphere. Previously a multi-purpose area, stocked with computers, they told us that they would prefer the books to be housed in a separate room with a more traditional library look and feel. In response to this the large room has been permanently divided and the computers removed, except for three bespoke study stations. The result is a contemporary space for quiet reading.

We have already invested in hundreds of new books but will continue the process of updating and re-stocking our new library. Our aim is that, by the time our new building is complete, we will have a truly outstanding range to suit all ages and interests.

The library is already being well used both during and outside of lesson times. The refurbishment has inspired the launch of a new initiative, which pairs Year 10 "Reading Mentors' with younger students. The scheme was launched by Mrs Mulryan, Teacher and Key Stage 3 Intervention Co-ordinator.

"The Reading Mentor scheme allows younger students to benefit from the reading skills of our most gifted Year 10's who are passionate about reading and want to share their love of books," she explains. "The scheme is proving to be very popular and the number of students taking part has increased dramatically in a matter of a few weeks."

"Studies show that good literacy skills are directly linked to success across the curriculum and these learning partnerships are hugely beneficial in terms of improving those skills through encouraging reading for pleasure. An initiative such as this also brings year groups together, which supports our Academy ethos of helping eachother."
