The exhibition of Tim Peake's return to Earth in the Soyuz TMA-19M descent module after six months on board the International Space Station, has now left our area for York, however around 150 young people at King James I Academy have recently enjoyed a virtual reality experience thanks to a themed touring bus.

The converted double-decker bus is designed to inspire young people to explore the idea of a career in Science, Technology or Engineering.

Students learned how to programme a space shuttle using iPad technology and experienced the 400km descent back to Earth in a virtual reality experience narrated by the astronaut himself.

Many of the students had already visited the Tim Peake exhibition at Locomotion in Shildon in December as part of an educational STEM (Science, Technology, engineering and Maths) trip. Raising aspirations and driving forward these subjects is a focus of our long-term plan at King James and an extensive programme of learning activities and events take place throughout the year.

In a forthcoming event, we will be working with The Army on an exciting challenge which involves designing, building and racing a robot car around a track!
