Oakley Cross pupils enjoyed Spanish inspired cooking in DT Food.

This month, over 400 local primary school children visited us during Year 5 Curriculum Week to take part in a variety of exciting lessons and experience secondary school life.

Pupils joined us from Cockton Hill, Copeland Road, Crook, Escomb, Etherley Lane, Oakley Cross, Prince Bishops, St. Andrews, St. Annes, St. Helens, Thornhill, Timothy Hackworth, Toft Hill and Victoria Lane primary schools for a range of fun packed taster sessions, which were pre-selected by their Head Teacher.

In Science, pupils turned Forensic Investigators and gathered evidence from a crime scene scenario, which they then tested back in the lab. They used a variety of forensic science techniques including finger printing and dusting, chemical testing, fibre identification and blood spatter analysis to estimate time of death, rule out suspects and to ascertain what happened.

Pupils also learned how to design, programme and build a competition robot in our Vex IQ Robotics taster session; this popular activity allows young people the opportunity to develop high level technology and computing skills.

In DT Food, young chefs created "Picasso Pastries', a tasty savoury snack inspired by the traditional Spanish Empanada. Pupils also heard about Spanish culture and cuisine before enjoying a practical language lesson in our "Continental Café'. Food was also the theme in our Art Department, although the creative "Mad Hatter' cakes which were moulded in salt dough were definitely not edible!

There were a number of opportunities to get active and develop team working skills. Many of our visitors discovered a new passion for Jamaican Dance in fun sessions led by our award-winning students, and enjoyed the experience of working together as a team in PE with football training, games and a variety of team-focused activities linked to our Duke of Edinburgh programme.

Students also experienced a range of inspirational lessons in Maths, English, RE, Music and Geography; and enjoyed an unique opportunity to learn about World War II History in a combined History/Media lesson, which involved script writing, acting and filming using green screen technology to create a news report.

We hope our visitors enjoyed their experience and look forward to welcoming them back to King James with their families at our Year 6 Open Evening in September.
