Throughout the year, we welcome hundreds of local primary school pupils to King James to enjoy a host of learning opportunities.

Since September, Victoria Lane Academy pupils have experienced Media green-screen technology and created artwork to review a book that they have read; and students from Toft Hill Primary have worked in Design Technology to design and manufacture their own product with excellent results. Etherley Lane visitors enjoyed working with the Martin Gray Football Academy and our Dramatic Arts Department has worked with many of our local schools on a range of creative projects.

Our extensive programme of learning opportunities is designed to give our local primary schools access to specialist equipment and facilities, and their pupils the opportunity to experience subjects not usually available until secondary level.

Currently, our Business Studies Department is working with Cockton Hill Primary, St Andrew's and Victoria Lane Academy on an entrepreneurial project called Bishop Primary Champions. The competition involves each school selecting teams of five students to set up and run their own mini-enterprise in school. Alongside the launch event, pictured here, which focused on teambuilding challenges and ideas generation, teams will attend three special events at King James to complete various task-based challenges. They will be supported by Business Studies Teacher, Mrs Lobb and a team of Sixth Form mentors.

Pupils will create a basic business plan, design a logo and decide how they are going to promote their business; they will also be keeping basic financial accounts to monitor their costs and see if they are making a profit. One of the main elements of the competition however, is that each team is given only £10 to set up their business, so they will need to be extremely creative in their thinking!

Points will be awarded throughout the competition for completing the various challenges. So far, scores are as follows: Cockton Hill Team 1 - 80, Cockton Hill Team 2 - 95, Victoria Lane - 75, St Andrew's Team 1 - 75, and St Andrew's Team 2 - 90 points.

In the coming months, more Primary pupils will be joining us to experience the Martin Gray Football Academy, coached Badminton, Gymnastics and fun sessions in Languages, alongside a combined History project, which investigates the Battle of the Somme. We will also be working in partnership with Victoria Lane Academy pupils on an exciting arts-based project for the community arts festival, Febfest 2016.
